Newer versions of Thunderbird and Firefox (starting around 2019) disable
by default the loading of the 'userChrome.css' file used to configure
display preferences. To enable it, you must enable via the Config Editor the setting
called toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets.
